Tatagwa
Artist: Eltje Degenhart
My work would probably be considered quite impressionistic in style. My issues are with prairie space and the dominance of the horizons.
The power of color to create that space and its psychological impact on the viewer are also concerns for me.
I am not an illustrator of accurate information, but rather a filter through which my prairie experiences flow.
The south east part of Saskatchewan is primarily my source of inspiration, it provides an endless amount of subject matter from which to play and experiment with paint.
The accidents that occur as I set up my underpainting are very important to the final result and I work from photos, digital, only for reference not as something to merely copy from.
I am a studio painter, although working on location is something I recommend to my students, for me the studio is predictable in light and temperature and allows me to have several paintings on the go.
This Tatagwa painting attempts to capture the tranquility of that space as well as the history of the area through its landmarks and vegetation.
